The National Mass Immunization campaign 2008 is a part of the National Strategy to eliminate measles and congenital rubella syndrome in Georgia by 2010, which itself responds to WHO strategic plan to eliminate these infections in the entire European region. The goal of GRCS project is to assist National Mass Immunization Campaign against Measles/Rubella through implementation of social mobilization activities in Kvemo Kartli region of Georgia.
National Center of Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC), WHO Georgia delegation, UNICEF, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Vishnevskaya-Rostropovich Foundation support the campaign implementation and are full members of the Inter-Agency Coordinating Committee (ICC).
On August 5, 2008 an official Memorandum of Understanding defining the roles of Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs and Georgia Red Cross Society was signed.
Due to current epidemic situation in Georgia the target group has been defined, which has included country population at the age of 6-27 years. The campaign will cover approximately 1, 200,000 people, almost 25% of the population, and will run from September to October, 2008. Seven supervisors and 21 leader-volunteers have been selected: one supervisor and three leader-volunteers in each district of Kvemo Kartli region - Rustavi, Gardabani, Dmanisi, Tetritskaro, Marneuli, Tsalka and Bolnisi. 300 mobilized, trained GRCS volunteers (among them 21 leaders-volunteers) participate in the campaign, distribute leaflets provided by ICC (UNICEF) and disseminate key messages on daily basis pre/during campaign and during house-to-house visits.
Different entertaining and cognitive events were organized in the period of October-November, which gave the opportunity to GRCS volunteers to gather targeted population and during above mentioned events permanently highlight messages about the vaccination importance.
On July 22, 2008 training of trainers (ToT) about social mobilization issues was organized at GRCS HQs. The training was facilitated by Irakli Khvedelidze - specially invited trainer, expert - Founder/director of the Caucasus Social Marketing Association. Training was conducted according to the interactive principle, which gave the participants opportunity to actively participate, ask questions and discuss different issues.Meetings are organized at HQs and local level on regular basis.
Throughout the Campaign H&C coordinator closely cooperates with ICC members and supervises the project implementation acoording to the planned activities.
It should be noted that coordination committees were established at regional and local levels by MoLHSA. The project supervisors are members of these committees and actively participate in their work.
