HIV/AIDS Prevention and Combatting the Stigma

Since 2005 year, the project - "HIV/AIDS Prevention and Combating the Stigma" became a part of Georgia Red Cross Society (GRCS) strategic plan. The aim of the project is to raise the community awareness on HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention. The trainings/seminars are conducted for the GRCS social workers and volunteers for making them capable of disseminating the correct and thorough information on HIV/AIDS to every member of community. The project envisages publishing of the informational materials on HIV/AIDS, carrying out of the KAP surveys in the community.

Within the framework of the program there is a cooperation with other governmental and non-governmental organizations. (Georgian AIDS and Clinical Immunology Research Center, "Tanadgoma", "Hera XXI"). Together with the association "Hera XXI" Georgia Red Cross Society showed the film on the history of HIV/AIDS and "the Band Played On" for 110 people in the "Amirani" Cinema. In Akhnaltsikhe and Kutaisi, the event organized by "Hera XXI" was attended by more than 50 GRCS Branch volunteers. In 2005, the information on AIDS was included in the booklet published within the project dealing with floods in Georgia.

Since 2005, GRCS systematically participates in local and international conferences and meetings. In the same year, GRCS became a member of the European RC/RC Societies Network on HIV/AIDS, Harm Reduction and Tuberculoses (ERNA).
GRCS representatives, Health and Care Coordinator and HR officer, participated in ERNA Annual Meeting organized through 21-24 September, 2007 in Tallinn, Estonia. The Meeting 2007 has highlighted new streams of community participation and partnership with affected communities in the Red Cross and Red Crescent HIV/ AIDS and TB programs.

In 2006, in Canada, the abstract of GRCS "Survey on HIV/AIDS Stigma in Two Regions of Georgia" submitted to XVI International HIV/AIDS conference was accepted for presentation.

GRSC strongly believes that by informing society about HIV/AIDS, the discrimination against infected persons will diminish significantly. In 2006, GRSC organized the Anti-stigma campaign in the framework of which posters were printed and handed over to various institutions and universities in Tbilisi. Occasionally GRCS invites its partner Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for sharing experience and holding informative/educational seminars on HIV/AIDS issues. The financial support of the program is provided by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
